Powa

In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Powa is considered the most valuable and effective practice for death. The word Phowa means the transference of consciousness into the state of truth. This is where Buddhists really swing into action, far more so than for births or any other occasions. Although the dead have lost the power to communicate with us, we have by no means lost the power to communicate with them.

Reciting of the prayers and chanting mantras begins shortly before death if possible, and continues throughout the 49-day period leading to rebirth so that the dying person receives blessings.
